Residents in Staffordshire can do their bit to make 2009 a ‘green’ Christmas by recycling
their festive waste during the holiday.
All of Staffordshire County Council’sHousehold Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC)will be open from9am-4.30pm between Sunday December 27 and ThursdayDecember 31. They will re-open on Saturday January 2 when they will operate as normal.
Each of the facilities will be open until 3pm on Christmas Eveand they will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Dayand New Year’s Day.
Items including newspapers, magazines, telephone directories, glass bottles, jars, fridges, freezers, scrap metal, car batteries and cooking oil can be recycled at thecentres but there are some exceptions at the facility in Newcastle.
The recycling team is urging people to sort throughand separate items before visiting the centres in order tospeed the process up when they arrive.
County Councillor Robert Marshall, Cabinet member for Regeneration and Infrastructure, said: “The countycouncil’s waste bosses are once again showing their commitment to boosting recycling and cutting CO2emissions by opening their recycling centres over the Christmas holiday.
“Over the festive break, we generally produce more waste than usual. There’s the packaging and boxes thatpresents come in as well as old or broken items that have been replaced by new versions and are no longerneeded. Residents all over Staffordshire can help to make 2009 a truly ‘green’ Christmas by cleaning out thissort of clutter and taking it down to their nearest recycling centre. Always remember that in the long run, themore we recycle, the less the county has to pay in disposal costs and the less we all have to pay in counciltax.”
