Possible Impacts on Recreation

River Trent at Wolseley BridgeIn addition to the more obvious impacts, climate change is also likely to affect the way we spend our leisure time. For example:

  • There is likely to be more outdoor activity as the climate warms, leading to an increase in risk of heatstroke or sunburn. Be aware of these risks: download these sun safety tips from the The British Association of Dermatologists.
  • Tourism to the UK could increase. This could benefit the economy but also lead to more road congestion and pressure on facilities.
  • Fire risk is very likely to increase, particularly in areas like Cannock Chase and the Staffordshire Moorlands, threatening both our ability to use these areas and their visual character.
  • Many people are now choosing to fly and drive less and are becoming more aware of green tourism options, questioning the sustainability not only of the way they travel but also the sustainability of the resorts and facilities they use.

Staffordshire is aiming to become a top Green Tourism destination. Watch this space: more details to come very soon!
